Jean S. Sheldon

Born July 13, 1928   -   Passed February 20, 2026

Jean S. Sheldon, a lifelong presence in the Sherman and Gaylordsville communities who earned national recognition for her civilian service during World War II, died on February 20, 2026, at Danbury Hospital. She was 97.

Born in Gaylordsville on July 13, 1928, to Dora Carlson Thorp and Willard Thorp, Mrs. Sheldon was raised in Sherman. During the Second World War, she stepped forward to serve her community and country as a civilian aircraft observer. Her wartime dedication later earned her formal national distinction as a recognized "Rosie the Riveter" and the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal for her patriotic service.

Following the war, she married Howard Sheldon, with whom she raised two children. Mrs. Sheldon remained deeply embedded in local civic life for decades. In 1965, she became a charter member and the inaugural president of the Gaylordsville Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary, an organization to which she devoted significant time over the years. She also served her community as a Matron and member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her daughter, Susann Cheney; her daughter-in-law, Judy Sheldon; five grandchildren, Justin, Jason, and Jesse Cheney, and Travis and Meghan Sheldon; and two great-grandchildren, Sophie and Tristan. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard, and her son, Wayne.
