The Night Watch: A Victory for the Flag Vigilante
After a quiet battle over proper illumination and municipal budgets, the town's flag is finally flying under the lights.
For quite some time, a quiet, nocturnal ritual has been playing out in the center of town. Because the of the lack on proper nighttime lighting, then damaged lighting, a local "flag vigilante" took it upon themselves to uphold the United States Flag Code. Under the cover of darkness, this civic-minded resident would arrive to respectfully lower the unlit flag, fold it properly, and return the flag at some future date to town hall.
It created a daily guessing game for residents passing by: would the colors be flying today, or had the vigilante struck again in the name of proper protocol?
Tonight, we have a quick update. The daily disappearing act appears to be on hold. A fresh flag has been hoisted over the gazebo, it remains flying high into the night, and most importantly, the lights are actually on.
